Why DNSSEC is Essential for Modern Infrastructure

Traditional DNS queries travel over plaintext UDP without cryptographic verification, leaving applications vulnerable to sophisticated redirection attacks.

🛡️

Stops DNS Cache Poisoning

Adversaries can inject fraudulent IP mappings into ISP recursive resolvers. DNSSEC attaches tamper-proof cryptographic signatures (RRSIG) to every response, allowing validating resolvers to reject forged records instantly.

🔐

Prevents Man-in-the-Middle Hijacks

Rogue Wi-Fi access points, compromised BGP routes, and untrusted transit networks cannot alter DNS responses without breaking the mathematical signature chain validated from the root zone (.) down.

Required for AI & Zero-Trust Ingress

Autonomous agents, secure TLS cert issuance (DANE / TLSA), and SSH fingerprint verification (SSHFP) rely on cryptographically authenticated DNS records to prevent automated payload interception.

// Next-Gen Cryptography

ECDSA Curve P-256 (Algorithm 13)

Many legacy providers still default to outdated RSA-2048 keys that produce massive UDP packets (often over 1,500 bytes), causing IP fragmentation, packet drops, and opening your domain to reflection DDoS attacks.

OnlyDNS exclusively uses ECDSA Curve P-256 with SHA-256 (Algorithm 13 / RFC 6605). It provides equivalent 128-bit security with signature payloads under 300 bytes — easily fitting within standard 512-byte UDP buffers with zero fragmentation.

✓ Automated Key Lifecycle Management

  • Zone Signing Keys (ZSK): Automatically rolled over on secure schedules without disrupting resolution or requiring manual effort.
  • Key Signing Keys (KSK / DS Records): For domains registered with OnlyDNS, DS updates to the registry are rolled over automatically. For external registrars, updated DS record parameters are exported in the portal and API to apply at your registrar.
  • Zero Complexity: No manual key generation commands, HSM configurations, or complex signing scripts.

Three Ways to Enable DNSSEC in Seconds

Deploy cryptographic DNS security whether you prefer our distraction-free Web Portal, terminal CLI, or automated API pipelines.

🖥️

1. Web Portal (1-Click)

Navigate to your domain in the OnlyDNS Portal and click DNSSEC Settings. Flip the switch to "Enabled" — your keys and signatures are generated instantly on all 23 global Anycast nodes.

Copy the pre-formatted Key Tag, Algorithm (13), Digest Type (2), and Digest directly to your registrar.

Enable DNSSEC and inspect delegation signer records directly from your developer terminal with OnlyDNS CLI.

# Enable DNSSEC on domain
onlydns dnssec enable example.com

# Inspect DNSSEC status and DS Records
onlydns dnssec status example.com

3. REST API / SDK

Automate domain security across multi-tenant platforms, SaaS applications, and AI agent workflows programmatically.

curl -X POST https://api.onlydns.com/v1/zones/example.com/dnssec \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $ONLYDNS_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"status": "active"}'
// Delegation Signer (DS) Parameters

Universal Registrar Compatibility

Once DNSSEC is enabled, provide these standard Delegation Signer (DS) fields at your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains, Cloudflare, Network Solutions, etc.). If your domain is registered with OnlyDNS, parent DS updates are handled automatically.

DNSSEC Frequently Asked Questions

How does automated key rollover work?

OnlyDNS automatically rolls over your Zone Signing Keys (ZSK) on scheduled cycles with zero downtime or manual effort required. For Key Signing Keys (KSK), which must be published back to your domain's registrar via a Delegation Signer (DS) record: if your domain is registered through OnlyDNS, DS updates to the parent registry are rolled over automatically. If your domain is registered with an external registrar, updated DS record parameters are provided in your OnlyDNS Portal and API to submit at your registrar.

What happens if I forget to configure the DS record at my registrar?

If DNSSEC is enabled in OnlyDNS but the DS record has not yet been submitted to your registrar, your domain will continue to resolve normally without downtime. Resolvers will simply treat the zone as unsigned until the parent TLD publishes your DS record.

How does OnlyDNS handle Dynamic DNS (RFC 2136) updates with DNSSEC?

Whenever records are modified or added via RFC 2136 Dynamic DNS or the OnlyDNS API, our authoritative engine instantly re-signs the affected resource record sets in real time across the entire Anycast edge.

Can I disable DNSSEC if I need to migrate away?

Yes. First remove the DS record from your registrar to break the parent delegation chain cleanly, wait for TTL expiration (usually 24 hours), and then toggle DNSSEC to disabled in OnlyDNS with zero resolution errors.
